Desperate vendors have nowhere to go

Open-air vendors again gathered outside the Yerevan Municipality to receive a final answer to their demands.

The vendors went to the street in late January after the newly appointed mayor made a decision to clamp down on street trade. During the last two week they have staged series of protests outside the Mayor's Office demanding a just solution to the matter.

It is already two weeks my family is starving. I am 60 years old and I have nowhere to go and no one to ask for help. We have no sugar or oil at home. What is to become of us?" said Mrs. Nazik.

"The government offered us to trade in the outskirts where there are no supermarkets," said Nune.

The vendors were angered at seeing policemen outside the Mayor's Office. Soon they were joined by Heritage MP Zaruhi Postanjyan who offered her help to the group.

However, the group dispersed without getting a definite answer. Mrs. Postanjyan promised to meet with authorities and give a concrete answer on February 9.
