* Kerry Schedules Bryza Confirmation Vote Despite Incomplete And Evasive Answers to Written Questions Submitted by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry, and Senators Barbara Boxer, Robert Menendez, and Russ Feingold

WASHINGTON—Senator John Kerry (D-MA), Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, today announced that his panel will hold a vote next Tuesday, August 3, on the confirmation of Matthew Bryza, President Obama’s controversial nominee to serve U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan, despite the nominee’s evasive and incomplete answers to a series of written questions submitted to him by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and key members of this influential panel, reported the Armenian National Committee of America.

“Mr. Bryza’s evasive, unresponsive, and incomplete written answers to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, even more than his spoken testimony before this panel, confirm our reservations about his troubling track record, and clearly confirm that he is not the right person to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan,” said Aram Hamparian, Executive Director of the ANCA. “American diplomacy in the region would be well served by a fresh start, with

“Peace for territories” principle is not only unacceptable in Nagorno-Karabakh settlement process but is full of unpredictable consequences for the region, Artsakh President Bako Sahakyan said in an interview with Interfax.

According to him, the cause of the conflict should be eliminated to reach final solution of the issue. Otherwise, according to Artsakh President, the conflict could re-occur in the future, even more intensively.

Bako Sahakyan expressed conviction that Karabakh-Azerbaijan dispute should be regulated basing on mutual concessions and the concessions should not be unilateral.

The Ghosts of Anatolia

It was in Jerusalem, in 1996, that I first learned of the "Armenian Holocaust," which occurred in Anatolia and other parts of the Ottoman Empire at the time of the First World War. I had spent several days in the Holy City with my wife just after I moved my medical career from the UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, to the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, and before I wrote my first published novel.

On that sunny spring day, we strolled down an alley on the edge of the Armenian Quarter and were struck by the difference between that quiet, sequestered part of Jerusalem, in the area around the perimeter of the Armenian Quarter where ordinary tourists were allowed to walk, and the other quarters (Christian, Jewish and Arab) of that enthralling city. We spoke with a policeman, who happened across our path, and he told us that it wasn't possible to see the homes and other areas of the Armenian Quarter unless you were Armenian, or were invited there by an Armenian friend.

Then, at the end of the alley, we came to a corner where a banner was pinned to a stanchion with a shocking photograph of a group of Armenian men hanging from scaffolds in Aleppo,

A number of political scientists commented on the visit and mentioned that that factually registered the freeze of Armenian-Turkish relations.
Although the U.S. Embassy had declared that the U.S. Secretary of State's visit to the memorial complex was "private", Turkish political figures gave sharp evaluations and presented them to "Hurriyet" newspaper.
