UN urges Serbia-Kosovo dialogue

The UN General Assembly has unanimously adopted a resolution calling for the EU-mediated dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo, foreign media reports said on Friday.

The document, which was earlier initiated by Serbia, says that that the dialogue may add significantly to maintaining peace, security and stability in the region.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle on Thursday welcomed Serbia's decision to water down its controversial resolution on Kosovo, due to be presented at the United Nations General Assembly.

"This is a clear signal that Serbia sees its future in the EU," said Westerwelle, adding that the decision by Serbian President Boris Tadic was an "important step" and a "success of European foreign policy."

"I call upon all parties to begin these talks rapidly...and lead to concrete results for the populace," Westerwelle urged.
