R Safrastyan: “Turkey will hold a referendum”

Calls for power change will be heard in Turkey after the constitutional referendum of September 12, says Ruben Safrastyan, Director of the RA NAS Institute of Oriental Studies.

"If the referendum succeeds, the ruling Justice and Development party (AKP) will demand pre-term parliamentary elections. Otherwise, the opposition will
demand a government change," Mr. Safrastyan told A1+.

Twenty-nine amendments are suggested to the Turkish constitution adopted in 1982 after the bloody coup of September, 1980. The amendments suggest reviewing the liabilities of the legislative body, changing the order of elections of judges and restricting the powers of military courts.

Ruben Safrastyan says that through the referendum, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan wants to pave a way to the European Union.

The opposition thinks that the referendum conflicts with the CoE Venice Commission which forbids implementation of several amendments at a time. Besides, they say the referendum defames Turkey's temporal image, contributes to the recognition of the Armenian genocide and guarantees withdrawal of Turkish troops from Cyprus.
