ECtHR to hear Pashinyan's case earlier

The Strasbourg-based European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has decided to consider the case of Armenian jailed opposition activist and editor of "Haykakan Zhamanak" daily Nikol Pashinyan in accelerated manner.

"It means that we shall not have to wait for ages to hear the court's verdict," said Pashinyan's lawyer Vahe Grigoryan adding that the decision was conditioned by the importance of the case.

"The ECtHR took such a decision as it considers the issue to be urgent. The court probably took into account the gross violations and continuous encroachment upon Pashinyan," said the lawyer.

Asked whether the decision will affect the final verdict, Grigoryan said, "I cannot predict anything. If the court studies the facts presented by us, it will rule in favor of Pashinyan. Let us wait for the final verdict."

Nikol Pashinyan was sentenced to seven years in prison on what he and his supporters call trumped-up charges stemming from the 2008 post-election unrest in Yerevan. Pashinyan was among several prominent opposition figures who went into hiding in March 2008 following a government crackdown on supporters of former president Levon Ter-Petrosyan demanding a re-run of a disputed presidential election. He surrendered to the authorities in July 2009 and was subsequently sentenced to imprisonment.
